Infineon Launches 1Mbit & 4Mbit F-RAMs for Automotive

The relentless expansion of the Event Data Recorder (EDR) market within the automotive sector is catalyzing an increased demand for specialized data storage solutions. These solutions are engineered to instantaneously capture crucial data and ensure its reliable retention for extended periods. Recently, Infineon Technologies has taken a significant step forward in this arena by expanding its EXCELONTM-FRAM memory product range. They have introduced two novel F-RAM memory devices, each offering distinct storage capacities, specifically 1Mbit and 4Mbit. Notably, the 1Mbit EXCELONTM-FRAM represents an industry milestone as the first automotive-grade serial FTM-RAM memory.

Both of these cutting-edge products have successfully undergone AEC-Q100 Grade 1 certification, underscoring their capacity to operate across a broader temperature spectrum, spanning from -40°C to +125°C. This expanded temperature tolerance effectively complements the existing portfolio of automotive-grade F-RAM memory devices, which encompass storage densities ranging from 4Kbit to 16Mbit. What sets these new memory solutions apart is their remarkable combination of rapid, highly reliable read/write performance, clocking in at an impressive 50 MHz in SPI mode and 108 MHz in Quad SPI (QSPI) mode. Furthermore, these memory devices boast a staggering 100 trillion read/write cycles, thus enabling data recording intervals as brief as 10 microseconds and sustaining this performance over two decades.

In a statement, Ramesh Chettuvetty, Vice President of RAM Solutions at Infineon Technologies, emphasized the growing need for data recording within automotive systems. "As electronic systems continue to proliferate and industry regulations promote the use of high-reliability non-volatile memory in critical automotive systems such as safety airbags, engine control, and battery management, the demand for data recording solutions is on an upward trajectory. With the rising number of applications requiring data recording and the call for customized storage densities for specific use cases, Infineon remains dedicated to aiding customers in meeting diverse memory architecture requirements for their system designs."

Infineon's EXCELON F-RAM memory stands out for its unique zero-delay write functionality, enabling continuous data capture and storage right up to the point of an accident or other user-defined triggering events. These new additions to the product lineup employ serial (SPI/QSPI) interfaces, harnessing the low-power attributes of F-RAM memory technology. They operate smoothly within a voltage range of 1.8V to 3.6V and come packaged in a standard 8-pin SOIC configuration. Beyond its exceptional durability, Infineon's F-RAM memory can preserve data for over a century following a power loss event.

Presently, Infineon's EXCELON automotive-grade F-RAM memory devices, featuring storage capacities of 1Mbit (CY15B201QN-50SXE) and 4Mbit (CY15B204QN-40SXE), are in full-scale production, catering to the evolving needs of the automotive industry.
