Microchip's 10BASE-T1S: Easy OEM Auto Device Integration

Automotive industry innovators are leveraging cutting-edge 10BASE-T1S Ethernet solutions to revolutionize partition architectures within vehicle applications. The 10BASE-T1S technology facilitates the integration of low-speed devices into standard Ethernet networks, obviating the necessity for bespoke communication systems. Today, Microchip Technology Inc., a renowned American semiconductor firm, proudly unveils its LAN8650/1 MAC-PHY series devices, meticulously crafted to meet the stringent demands of automotive applications. This release represents a significant expansion of their automotive-grade Ethernet solutions portfolio. The LAN8650 and LAN8651 MAC-PHY devices are equipped with a robust Media Access Controller (MAC) and a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), designed to seamlessly connect devices operating at the periphery of automotive networks.

The built-in MAC and SPI capabilities of the LAN8650/1 devices empower designers to seamlessly integrate 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit microcontrollers lacking integrated Ethernet MACs into 10BASE-T1S Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) networks. This integration seamlessly merges sensors and actuators, bridging the gap between the digital and physical realms within a comprehensive Ethernet architecture. Importantly, this integration is attainable even with rudimentary microcontrollers, yielding substantial reductions in design dimensions and cost overheads.

Matthias Kaestner, Vice President of Microchip's Automotive Business, articulated, "Microchip remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing automotive connectivity solutions through the 10BASE-T1S product line, delivering turnkey solutions that precisely align with the diverse needs of our valued clientele. This breakthrough technology effectively orchestrates the connection of sensors and actuators in the physical world with cloud-based infrastructure, thus ushering in a seamless Ethernet architecture within the automotive domain. The result is a streamlined development process and a swift time-to-market."

The new series of devices also boasts Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) support, enabling precise timing synchronization for extensive Ethernet networks. This synchronization is indispensable for a wide array of automotive applications, most notably Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

The LAN8650/1 MAC-PHY devices have attained rigorous certifications within the automotive industry, aligning with the AEC-Q100 Grade 1 certification standards. This adherence enhances operational stability in challenging environmental conditions, including an extended operational temperature range spanning from -40°C to 125°C. Furthermore, these devices meticulously adhere to functional safety requirements, rendering them exceptionally suitable for ISO 26262 applications.

Endowed with robust security protocols designed to fortify network system security, Ethernet solutions continue to gain notable traction within the automotive sector. Significantly, these systems facilitate extensions to the network periphery without necessitating extensive modifications or fresh development endeavors.
