Melexis MLX90423: Advanced Automotive Position Sensor

In a major development on October 13, 2023, Melexis, a leading player in microelectronics engineering, introduced its latest innovation, the MLX90423 magnetic position sensor chip. This cutting-edge addition to the acclaimed MLX9042x sensor series promises enhanced performance and increased versatility, making it an attractive choice for various applications.

The MLX90423 boasts an impressive range of up to 30mm, offering exceptional precision in long-travel measurements. Furthermore, it excels in resisting stray magnetic field interference (SFI) and adheres to ISO26262 standards, supporting ASIL D system integration. Its impeccable performance-to-cost ratio makes it an ideal solution for automotive Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), particularly in space-constrained applications such as braking systems.

The core technology driving the MLX90423 is Melexis Triaxis® Hall, enabling linear displacement of up to 30mm with unrivaled accuracy. Remarkably, this level of precision is typically attainable only through advanced sensing technologies. The MLX90423 comes in a single-die ASIL C configuration, with a dual-die option for ASIL D system integration. Moreover, it inherits the superior performance characteristics of its series peers, ensuring superior accuracy across its entire operational temperature range.

This highly integrated magnetic position sensor chip includes a Triaxis® Hall magnetic front end, modulated signal conditioning, a digital signal processor (DSP), and a programmable output driver. By detecting the three components of magnetic induction (Bx, By, and Bz) applied to the chip, the MLX90423 accurately deciphers the absolute position of linear-moving magnets, granting engineers precise control over various applications, from brake pedal travel to pedal position and parking lock actuation.

The MLX90423 offers a range of output options, including proportional analog output, PWM output, and SENT output encoded in accordance with safety sensor formats. It complies with the ISO 11452-8 standard and is capable of withstanding interference from stray magnetic fields up to 5mT (4kA/m).

Melexis designed the MLX90423 with a focus on ensuring successful electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing, reducing the likelihood of issues due to electrical overstress, and meeting the rigorous requirements of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). This sensor's operating temperature can reach up to an impressive 160°C.

All MLX9042x devices have undergone rigorous AEC-Q100 certification. Users have the flexibility to choose between SMD packaging or the innovative SMP-3 PCB-less packaging, which integrates the sensor chip and EMC capacitors within a single mold.
