NXP Semiconductors (Nasdaq: NXPI) has recently announced the latest addition to its automotive computing platform, the S32M2, designed to optimize motor control applications. Tailored for efficiency enhancements in automotive components such as pumps, fans, sunroofs, seat positioning, seatbelt tensioners, and trunk doors, the S32M2 seamlessly integrates NXP's motor control expertise with the software development advantages of the S32 platform.
This highly integrated System-in-Package (SiP) solution features essential power and analog functions for motor control, accompanied by a robust software library. Serving as an integrated motor control solution for NXP's widely adopted S32K microcontrollers, the S32M2 meets the evolving demands of the software-defined electric vehicle market. This not only streamlines product development for automotive manufacturers but also maximizes software reuse within the S32 platform.
Focused on Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) and Permanent Magnet Synchronous (PMSM) motors, known for durability, compact size, lightweight, and high efficiency, the S32M2 simplifies powerful motor control functions for efficient operations. It maintains performance headroom for integrating additional features and characteristics, all while optimizing costs.
Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) can conduct motor diagnostic tests, transmit data for optimization, and reduce audio noise in the final application for enhanced passenger comfort. Compared to discrete motor control solutions, the S32M2 accelerates product time-to-market for OEMs, reduces printed circuit board size, mitigates design risks, and lowers material costs.
Employing a System-in-Package (SiP) packaging approach, the S32M2 combines advanced computing capabilities with MOSFET gate drivers, physical layer interfaces for CAN FD and LIN communication, and an onboard regulator powered directly by the vehicle's 12V battery to address diverse motor control application needs.
The S32M2 series integrates Arm Cortex-M4 or Cortex-M7 cores, offering a range of memory options from 128KB to 1MB. Packaged in a 64-pin LQFP format, the S32M2 supports flexible memory size selection for automotive manufacturers, ensuring pin compatibility across the product series. Additionally, this SiP packaging solution leverages the S32K development process with ISO 26262 ASIL B functional safety certification, validated security subsystems (CSEc, HSE), and the comprehensive tools and software ecosystem of the S32K platform.
