Intel Corporation has officially communicated its workforce reduction plans to the California Employment Development Department. The company is set to implement layoffs, affecting approximately 76 employees at its Santa Clara headquarters and around 235 employees at the Folsom Campus. This strategic workforce adjustment, totaling about 311 individuals, is scheduled to commence on December 31 and extend over a two-week period.
The staff reduction initiative aligns with Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger's comprehensive cost-cutting strategy initiated last year in response to the impact of declining market demand. Intel aims to achieve a significant cost reduction of $10 billion by 2025, employing measures such as workforce adjustments, reduced working hours, and potential divestiture of certain business units.
It is noteworthy that in August of the current year, Intel had previously announced the reduction of 140 employees in California, including 89 from the Folsom Campus and 51 from San Jose. Within the Folsom Campus, 37 job categories will be affected, spanning roles such as GPU software development engineers, system software development engineers, cloud computing software engineers, product marketing engineers, and single-system chip (SoC) design engineers.
Intel's Folsom Campus is a hub for various research and development activities, encompassing solid-state drives (SSD), graphics processors, software development, and chip design. Since the divestiture of its 3D NAND and SSD business in 2021, Intel has been strategically transitioning relevant positions to Solidigm or offering compensation for departing employees.
Recent data indicates a workforce reduction of nearly 500 employees at the Folsom Research Center in the current year, and with the planned layoffs of 235 employees, the cumulative job cuts will surpass 700.
In a previous statement, Intel spokesperson Addy Burr affirmed, "Intel is actively advancing the implementation of its established strategy, employing various measures to enhance cost efficiency, including streamlining specific business and function-related personnel across the company. Additional adjustments may be anticipated in the coming year." The statement also emphasized that Intel maintains an approximate workforce of 13,000 employees in California and remains committed to ongoing investments in U.S. manufacturing.
