Qualcomm Launches XR2+ Gen 2: Single-Eye 4.3K Support

On January 5th, Qualcomm announced the launch of its cutting-edge processor platform designed for Extended Reality (XR) devices the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen2 chip. This single-chip architecture is poised to rival Apple's upcoming Vision Pro.

Distinguishing itself with a 20% boost in CPU frequency and a 15% increase in GPU frequency compared to its predecessor, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen2 stands out as a high-performance solution. It supports a remarkable single-eye display resolution of up to 4.3K×4.3K and achieves a smooth frame rate of 90FPS. Additionally, its capability to simultaneously support 12 or more cameras enables precise tracking of both the external environment and user interactions within XR devices.

In addition to these features, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 offers 12ms full-color video passthrough and supports Wi-Fi 7, aligning with the established specifications of the XR2 Gen 2.

Qualcomm has disclosed strategic collaborations with Google and Samsung to develop innovative products based on the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2. Inkang Song, Vice President and Head of the Technical Strategy Team at Samsung Electronics, conveyed enthusiasm for reshaping the mobile industry through this partnership. He stated, "Leveraging Samsung's mobile expertise and our shared commitment, our aim is to deliver an exceptional XR experience for Galaxy users."

Shahram Izadi, Vice President of AR at Google, expressed eagerness for ongoing collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies and Samsung on the evolution of immersive XR spaces. He commented, "We are excited about the potential for the Android ecosystem to harness the capabilities of Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, ushering in new and compelling experiences."

Qualcomm also revealed that five prominent Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) companies are actively working on devices capitalizing on the advantages offered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2. These include Samsung and Google headphones, as well as HTC's projects such as Vice, etc.. This points towards an exciting future with a myriad of impressive XR devices poised to captivate audiences.
