Samsung and Arm: GAA Tech Optimizes Cortex-X CPU

Samsung Electronics has formally announced a strategic collaboration with Arm to enhance the next generation Arm® Cortex™-X CPU using the latest Gate-All-Around (GAA) process technology at Samsung's cutting-edge semiconductor fabrication facility. This collaboration, founded on a longstanding partnership with Arm, extends to millions of devices already integrating Arm CPU intellectual property (IP) and functioning across diverse process nodes offered by Samsung's semiconductor facility.

The joint efforts of the two companies encompass an ambitious initiative to redefine the 2nm GAA process, customizing chips for upcoming data centers and infrastructure. Simultaneously, they aim to introduce an innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) chip solution poised to revolutionize the future landscape of generative AI within the mobile computing market.

Samsung has heralded the commencement of production for the 3nm Multi-Bridge Channel Field Effect Transistors (MBCFET™), a development based on Samsung's 2022 GAA technology. The GAA technology enables a further reduction in device size beyond the FinFET generation, lowering power supply voltage levels, augmenting power efficiency, and increasing driving current capability for enhanced performance.

Arm, leveraging Samsung's next-generation GAA process nodes, has introduced an optimized iteration of the latest Cortex-X CPU. This advancement promises additional performance and efficiency enhancements, elevating user experiences to unprecedented levels.

In the relentless pursuit of product delivery excellence, the imperative of ensuring accurate manufacturing of silicon with the most competitive Power, Performance, and Area (PPA) characteristics on the initial attempt cannot be overstated. Hence, the optimization of design and manufacturing processes is inseparable. From inception, the collaborative efforts of the Samsung and Arm teams have centered on the adoption of design technology optimization, a critical factor in maximizing the advantages of the next-generation Cortex-X CPU design architecture and GAA process technology PPA.

Generative AI stands as a pivotal driver for delivering superior user experiences in the upcoming product wave. Through this collaboration, Samsung and Arm expedite the implementation of optimizations for the next generation Cortex-X CPU on Samsung's latest GAA process technology, driving innovation and establishing industry-leading performance benchmarks for the next wave of products.
