Arm Targets 50% Windows PC Market by 2029

On June 3, during COMPUTEX 2024, Arm, a leading semiconductor IP company, announced its strategic goal to secure over 50% of the Windows PC market share within the next five years. This ambitious plan coincides with Microsoft and its hardware partners' preparations to launch a new wave of computers powered by Arm technology. Projections made at the COMPUTEX Taipei International Computer Show indicate that by the end of 2025, 100 billion Arm-based devices globally will be AI-ready.

The demand for Arm's technology in PCs has surged following Microsoft's ambitious announcement in May about introducing AI-enabled PCs to compete with Alphabet and Apple. The flagship Windows operating system will now be compatible with chips designed by Arm, a company renowned for its significant contributions to the smartphone industry. For decades, Intel has dominated the PC sector, but Arm's successful expansion could reshape the computing landscape.

"Within the Windows ecosystem, I firmly believe that Arm's market share could exceed 50% over the next five years," stated Arm CEO Rene Haas.

Microsoft is making considerable efforts to ensure that its alternative to AMD and Intel x86 technology gains consumer acceptance, developing an extensive suite of software tools to support numerous applications on Arm-based chips.

"Microsoft has surpassed previous efforts in tool development and has made significant improvements in recent years," added Rene Haas. "From a software standpoint, they are highly dedicated."

Following Apple's success with Arm designs, which have resulted in devices with impressive battery life and performance, Microsoft and other hardware vendors are adopting similar strategies. Apple has been selling devices with its "M-series" processors for about four years, showcasing the potential of Arm-based technology.

Rene Haas noted that Qualcomm designed the first Arm-based chip to introduce new Windows-based Arm devices to consumers and enterprises, with more suppliers expected to join the market.

Additionally, Microsoft has partnered with several device manufacturers, including ASUS and Dell Technologies, to produce and sell devices featuring Arm-designed chips.
