Micron Acquires AUO Tainan Assets for NT$8.1 Billion

On August 27, AUO Corporation announced two major transactions involving the sale of its assets. The company will divest its property in the Tainan Technology Industrial Park and facilities, including a parking lot, from its subsidiary AUO Crystal located in the Hsinchu Science Park to Micron Technology. The total value of these transactions is NT$8.1 billion, with an estimated profit of NT$4.718 billion.

AUO's decision to sell these assets is part of its strategic effort to enhance operational focus, revitalize assets, and optimize its financial structure. The board of directors has approved the sale of the Tainan property and select AUO Crystal assets to Micron, aligning with the company's broader operational goals.

Micron Technology emphasized that it regularly reassesses and adjusts its global manufacturing strategy to address business demands and deliver innovative solutions. The acquisition of these facilities in Taiwan is aimed at meeting the increasing product demand driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and reinforcing Micron's leadership in the market.

Micron has entered into a Purchase and Sale Agreement (PSA) with AUO to acquire the Tainan factory's land and equipment. This facility will be dedicated to front-end wafer testing, supporting the growing production of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) at Micron's Taichung and Taoyuan sites.

Previously, there were reports that Micron, having lost a bid to TSMC for the InnoLux Nanke Fourth Plant, showed interest in AUO's color filter factories C5D and C6C in the Tainan Technology Industrial Park. These factories were considered for repurposing into HBM production lines for AI servers.
