MediaTek Unveils Flagship Dimensity 9400 AI Chip
On October 9, 2024, MediaTek unveiled its flagship Dimensity 9400 5G AI chip, featuring a cutting-edge second-generation full-core architecture. With significant upgrades to the GPU and NPU processors, the Dimensity 9400 promises exceptional intelligence, high performance, energy efficiency, and low power consumption. The chip enhances AI capabilities for mobile gaming, advanced imaging, and on-device AI experiences, pushing the boundaries of mobile technology.
The Dimensity 9400 is powered by a second-generation CPU architecture, featuring one Cortex-X925 core with a clock speed of 3.62GHz, three Cortex-X4 cores, and four Cortex-A720 cores. This new architecture delivers a 35% boost in single-core performance and a 28% increase in multi-core performance over the previous generation. Built on TSMC's second-generation 3nm process, the chip offers a 40% reduction in power consumption, significantly extending battery life.
The chip integrates MediaTek’s eighth-generation NPU 890 AI processor, which excels in generative AI tasks. It supports LoRA training and high-quality video generation directly on the device, providing developers with advanced AI capabilities. The NPU delivers an 80% improvement in large language model (LLM) processing and a 35% reduction in power usage, laying the foundation for future AI applications.
Equipped with the Dimensity Agentic AI Engine, the chip enables a new class of intelligent AI applications, upgrading traditional AI programs. MediaTek is collaborating with developers to establish unified interfaces between AI agents, third-party apps, and large models, enabling efficient edge AI computing and cloud integration. This technology also shortens AI product development cycles, fostering a richer AI ecosystem.
The Dimensity 9400 also features the next-generation 12-core Immortalis-G925 GPU, delivering 41% more peak performance while reducing power consumption by 44%. With a 40% improvement in ray tracing capabilities, the GPU significantly enhances gaming immersion. The chip supports PC-level OMM ray tracing, creating realistic light and shadow effects in gaming. Additionally, the integrated Star Speed Engine offers advanced frame interpolation and upscaling technologies, providing a smooth gaming experience while conserving power and extending battery life.
For imaging, the Dimensity 9400 includes a flagship ISP, the Imagiq 1090, which supports full-spectrum HDR technology. Video creators can capture stunning footage across all focal lengths, and with the Smooth Zoom technology, the chip enables precise video zooming, even when capturing moving subjects. The chip also optimizes power consumption during video recording and photography, reducing the power required for 4K60fps video recording by 14%.
Key features of the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 include:
· 5G Connectivity: Equipped with a next-gen 3GPP R17 5G modem, supporting 4CC-CA and a downlink speed of up to 7Gbps on Sub-6GHz networks. The chip also supports dual SIM 5G/4G dual standby.
· Wireless Connectivity: A 4nm Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chip supporting tri-band Wi-Fi 7 with a theoretical speed of up to 7.3Gbps, and a 50% reduction in power consumption compared to previous generations. It also includes MediaTek’s Xtra Range™ 3.0 technology, extending Wi-Fi coverage by up to 30 meters.
