An executive from LG Electronics has announced that the company will develop customized AI chiplets for its home appliances, offering a more cost-effective solution compared to existing market chips. Jin Gyeong Kim, head of LG's SoC Center, noted that chips provided by companies like Intel and Qualcomm are generic. By eliminating unnecessary features and utilizing chiplet technology, LG aims to reduce costs by up to 50%.
Chiplets are a more affordable manufacturing approach that combines separately produced chips through packaging, rather than integrating all functionalities into a single silicon chip. LG's SoC Center, overseen by its Chief Technology Officer, is also focused on developing proprietary intellectual property.
Furthermore, LG plans to collaborate with industry leaders such as Samsung, Intel, and TSMC for contract manufacturing. Kim stated that the company intends to utilize 7nm and 5nm process nodes for its AI chiplets, specifically designed for on-device applications.
These innovative chips are expected to enhance the resolution and sound quality of televisions and improve the convenience of home appliances. Kim also mentioned that the concept validation for these chips has already been completed. In September, LG announced a partnership with Blue Cheetah, a U.S.-based chip intellectual property firm, to further develop chiplet technology.
