Rapidus Nears 2nm Fab Completion, Plans 1.4nm Chips

Japan-based chipmaker Rapidus has announced that construction of its first wafer fab in Hokkaido is now 80% complete. This facility will be dedicated to producing 2nm chips, with plans to transition to manufacturing 1.4nm chips once 2nm production reaches full scale.

Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry, Yoji Muto, recently visited the Hokkaido site and affirmed the government’s commitment to further support Rapidus in its chip production efforts. According to Rapidus founder and CEO Atsuyoshi Koike, the company is poised to start mass production of 2nm chips at this initial fab, while a second fab will focus on advancing 1.4nm chip technology.

Muto emphasized that to ensure a stable supply of advanced chips, Japan must expand its zero-carbon energy resources, including nuclear, wind, and geothermal power.

Supporting the creation of a local semiconductor ecosystem, the Hokkaido Emerging Industries Cluster Promotion Organization estimates that Rapidus' establishment in Hokkaido could generate an economic ripple effect of up to 18.8 trillion yen by fiscal year 2036. The project is already drawing economic activity, with approximately 4,000 workers currently involved in construction, and an influx of new housing, hotels, and businesses developing to support the workforce and Rapidus employees.
