Samsung Display Advances 8.6-Generation OLED Production to 2025

In a recent earnings call for the third quarter, Samsung Display announced that it has completed the major equipment for its 8.6-generation OLED production line, which is specifically aimed at the IT sector. The company is on track to achieve mass production by 2026. However, the timing and scale of this expansion will be reassessed based on the technological stability of the 8.6-generation line and market demand from clients.

According to recent media reports, sources indicate that Samsung Display is considering moving the mass production schedule for the 8.6-generation IT OLED panels forward to as early as the end of 2025. Prior to supplying these panels for Apple's IT devices, Samsung Display plans to prioritize deliveries to Samsung Electronics. Industry analysts believe that since this marks the company's first foray into mass-producing 8.6-generation OLED panels, they aim to allow ample time to enhance product stability.

The 8.6-generation OLED glass substrate measures 2250mm × 2600mm, representing more than double the size of the 6th generation substrate. This increase in size results in improved production efficiency; for instance, while a 6th generation substrate can produce approximately 32 panels for 14-inch laptops, the 8.6-generation substrate can yield up to 88 panels. Samsung Display's investment in the 8.6-generation production line is primarily driven by the demand for OLED panels in Apple's iPad and MacBook devices. However, as OLED technology continues to replace LCD panels in the IT sector, the 8.6-generation OLED panels will also meet the needs of other clients, including Samsung Electronics.
