TSMC Plant to Begin 4nm Production in Early 2025

According to recent media reports, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is making significant progress with its U.S. plant in Arizona. The first factory will begin production using the 4nm process, with mass production expected to commence in early 2025. The facility's monthly production capacity could reach 20,000 to 30,000 wafers.

The second plant is set to adopt the 3nm process, with an estimated monthly production capacity of 25,000 wafers. By 2028, the combined capacity of both plants is projected to reach 60,000 wafers per month. Meanwhile, the third plant will implement the 2nm process or even more advanced technologies, with completion expected before 2030.

Industry experts note that the first Arizona plant will hold its grand opening ceremony in early December, with mass production scheduled for 2025. In February 2025, TSMC is also planning to host its first-ever board meeting in the U.S., raising speculation about its potential connection to the U.S. CHIPS Act.

In September, TSMC shared an update on its progress, revealing that the new Arizona plant had achieved impressive results during its trial production phase. The engineering wafers produced in April this year showed yield rates comparable to those of TSMC's Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) facility. The company confirmed that the project is progressing according to plan and is on track.

Sources from the supply chain indicate that the Arizona plant began trial production in April 2024, with yields reaching levels similar to those of the STSP's 18-inch wafer factory. The plant has surpassed expectations in terms of performance and timeline, even celebrating the achievement with a special milestone event, offering donuts and cakes to employees.

Given the rapid progress of trial production and yield improvement, industry insiders believe that the Arizona plant could complete all preparations for mass production ahead of schedule, potentially meeting or even exceeding TSMC's original 2025 mass production target.
