The key distinction between the standard iPhone models and their "Pro" versions in recent years has been Apple's introduction of LTPS and LTPO technology. For the higher-end models, the adoption of LTPO technology has meant better power efficiency, enhanced color reproduction, and support for ProMotion, enabling a smooth 120Hz refresh rate.
However, this difference may no longer exist next year, as rumors suggest that all iPhone 17 models will adopt LTPO OLED panels. The buzz around the new iPhone 18 series, however, points to a potential advancement in display technology—an upgraded LTPO+ that could provide another incentive for customers to opt for the more expensive iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max.
According to independent analyst and consulting firm Omdia, Apple is expected to introduce LTPO+ technology in the coming two years. While specific details remain unclear, sources indicate that LTPO+ has yet to be developed, but once in production, it will claim enhanced properties compared to standard LTPO, including improved efficiency.
With Samsung and LG as the primary suppliers of iPhone displays, it's highly likely that these two South Korean manufacturers will play a key role in bringing LTPO+ to market. It's worth noting that Samsung initially hesitated to mass-produce the series OLED displays for Apple's M4 iPad Pro due to profitability concerns, only agreeing to proceed once large enough orders were in place.
While these setbacks resulted in delays, Apple's ability to persuade Samsung and LG to invest in research and development for the next-generation OLED displays is crucial. The introduction of LTPO+ could require billions in investments to establish dedicated production lines. Should these hurdles arise, it's possible that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max may still use the standard LTPO technology initially.
