CXMT Begins Mass Production of DDR5 with 80% Yield

According to a report from ZDNet Korea, Chinese DRAM manufacturer Changxin Memory Technologies (CXMT) has officially started mass production of DDR5 memory chips. Several DRAM module makers have already begun offering DRAM modules based on these DDR5 chips, signaling that CXMT is accelerating its efforts to close the gap with leading DRAM manufacturers.

Currently, only a few DRAM manufacturers—such as Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron—are able to produce DDR5 chips. A semiconductor industry insider shared, "From what I know, CXMT has recently started manufacturing DDR5 chips and is in active discussions with potential customers. The reported yield rate is around 80%." This yield is comparable to the 80-90% yield rates seen by major Korean companies, indicating that CXMT has made significant progress in its manufacturing capabilities.

Reports indicate that Chinese memory module brands, including King Bank and Gloway, have started selling 32GB DDR5 DRAM modules labeled as "domestic DDR5" through online e-commerce platforms. While these brands have not disclosed the specific source of their DDR5 chips, industry experts believe the chips are manufactured by CXMT.

In a written interview with ZDNet Korea, Dr. Jeongdong Choi from TechInsights stated, "We will soon analyze these DDR5 chips and closely monitor their impact on the market." Dr. Choi also noted, "Although CXMT has not officially disclosed its DDR5 development plans, I know that the DDR5 chips are being developed using the G3 process (17.5nm node). DDR4 was commercialized using the G1 process (22nm), and LPDDR4X is being produced using both the G1 and G3 processes."

In November 2023, CXMT also announced the launch of its LPDDR5 DRAM series on its official website, marking its official entry into the mobile device market. The company successfully completed module verification with major Chinese smartphone brands, including Xiaomi and Transsion.

Founded in 2016, CXMT has rapidly grown to become China's largest DRAM manufacturer. Initially focusing on 19nm DDR4, LPDDR4, and LPDDR4X chips, the company has gained adoption from numerous memory module makers.
