According to a recent report from market research firm Omdia, AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) panels are projected to capture 43% of the global display panel market revenue by 2028, while the current market leader, TFT LCD (Thin-Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display), will see its share decrease to 55%. In comparison, in 2022, AMOLED panels accounted for 34% of the market, while LCD held a 65% share.
Omdia attributes the rising popularity of AMOLED panels to their many advantages, making them a preferred choice for high-end electronic products such as smartphones, televisions, and wearable devices. These benefits include superior picture quality, thinner and lighter designs, and increased flexibility. Particularly, the self-emissive nature of OLED technology eliminates the need for a backlight, resulting in higher energy efficiency and the ability to display true blacks, features that have won over consumers. These attributes are fueling the widespread adoption of AMOLED technology in premium product lines.
Additionally, Omdia noted a shift in the LCD television market, where manufacturers are increasingly focusing on the production of ultra-large TVs, specifically those with 80-inch screens or larger. This trend is having a noticeable impact on the competitive landscape, particularly against OLED televisions. As a result, Omdia has revised its demand forecast for the OLED TV market, reflecting this change in consumer preferences.
