MediaTek Unveils Dimensity 8400 5G AI Chip
On December 23, 2024, MediaTek unveiled its latest innovation, the Dimensity 8400 5G All-Core Smart AI chip. Building on the advanced technologies of MediaTek's flagship Dimensity series, the Dimensity 8400 introduces an innovative all-core architecture, designed to enhance the premium smartphone market with exceptional performance and next-generation AI capabilities. This chip brings a powerful AI experience to high-end devices, offering intelligent, AI-powered features to elevate user interactions.
Dr. Yenchi Lee, General Manager of MediaTek's Wireless Communications Business Unit, commented, "The Dimensity 8400 continues the legacy of our flagship series with its all-core architecture, offering impressive performance and energy efficiency that redefine the high-end smartphone experience. Additionally, its exceptional generative AI and smart AI capabilities will expand cutting-edge AI technology to a wider audience."
The Dimensity 8400 features an all-core CPU configuration, consisting of eight Arm Cortex-A725 cores with clock speeds up to 3.25GHz, delivering a 41% increase in multi-core performance over its predecessor. Thanks to precise power management technologies, the CPU's multi-core power consumption is reduced by 44%, extending battery life for longer usage.
Equipped with the Arm Mali-G720 GPU, the Dimensity 8400 offers a 24% boost in peak performance and a 42% reduction in power consumption compared to the previous generation. It also supports advanced frame interpolation and MediaTek's HyperEngine for smoother, more fluid gaming experiences, providing gamers with high-frame-rate, low-power gameplay.
The Dimensity 8400 integrates MediaTek's flagship AI processor, the NPU 880, combining its all-core CPU with powerful NPU collaboration to deliver fast, generative AI processing. It supports the latest large language models (LLM), small language models (SLM), and multimodal models (LMMs), enabling features like AI-powered translation, content rewriting, contextual responses, call summaries, and multimedia content generation directly on the device.
Additionally, the Dimensity 8400 introduces MediaTek's Dimensity Agentic AI Engine, first seen in the Dimensity 9400, which empowers developers to create groundbreaking smart AI applications. This engine transforms traditional AI apps into advanced, intelligent solutions that anticipate user needs and provide personalized smart services. As a result, the Dimensity Agentic AI Engine helps accelerate the adoption of AI-powered experiences across a broader range of mobile devices.
According to MediaTek's benchmark testing, the Dimensity 8400 achieves an impressive score of 1,806,141 points based on its all-core architecture.
The Dimensity 8400 also includes the MediaTek Imagiq 1080 ISP image processor, featuring QPD zoom hardware for enhanced light capture, faster focusing, and more precise image resolution. Additionally, the chip supports MediaTek's full-focus HDR technology, enabling video creators to easily shoot stunning content across various focal lengths.
Other key features of the Dimensity 8400 include:
· A 5G-A modem with support for three-carrier aggregation (3CC-CA), enabling download speeds up to 5.17Gbps.
· A network quality monitoring system to optimize gaming network connections by intelligently selecting the best 5G or Wi-Fi network for higher speeds and lower power consumption.
· Support for 144Hz WQHD+ displays and foldable dual-screen devices.
In an exciting announcement at the launch event, Thomas Wang, General Manager of Redmi, revealed that the first device featuring the Dimensity 8400-Ultra processor will be the Redmi Turbo4, a collaboration between Redmi, MediaTek, and Arm. The device is expected to debut globally in early 2025.
