Infineon Delivers First 8-Inch SiC Products to Customers

Infineon Technologies has announced a major milestone in its 200mm (8-inch) silicon carbide (SiC) roadmap. The company revealed that, by the first quarter of 2025, it will launch its first products based on advanced 200mm SiC technology to customers. These products, manufactured in its facility in Villach, Austria, are designed for high-voltage applications such as renewable energy, trains, and electric vehicles, providing top-tier SiC power technologies.

Additionally, Infineon's manufacturing site in Kulim, Malaysia, is making substantial progress in transitioning from 150mm (6-inch) wafers to larger, more efficient 200mm wafers. The newly built Module 3 will soon begin mass production in response to market demand.

Dr. Rutger Wijburg, Chief Operating Officer of Infineon, commented: "Our SiC production plans are advancing as scheduled, and we are proud to launch the first products to our customers. By gradually increasing SiC production volumes in Villach and Kulim, we are enhancing cost efficiency while maintaining high product quality. At the same time, we are ensuring that our manufacturing capabilities meet the growing demand for SiC-based power semiconductors."

SiC semiconductors are transforming high-power applications with their ability to enable more efficient power switching, exhibit high reliability and robustness in extreme conditions, and support smaller designs. Infineon's SiC products empower customers to develop energy-efficient solutions for electric vehicles, fast charging stations, trains, renewable energy systems, and AI data centers. The introduction of 200mm wafer-based SiC products marks a significant step forward in Infineon's SiC roadmap, underscoring the company's commitment to providing a comprehensive, high-performance power semiconductor portfolio that supports green energy and reduces CO2 emissions.

As a leading innovator in wide-bandgap (WBG) technologies, Infineon's "virtual factory" model enables its Villach and Kulim sites to share technology and processes, driving rapid advancements in the production of SiC and gallium nitride (GaN) and ensuring smooth, efficient operations. The 200mm SiC manufacturing efforts further strengthen Infineon's proven track record in delivering industry-leading semiconductor technologies and power systems solutions, reinforcing the company's leadership across the power semiconductor sector, which includes silicon, SiC, and GaN technologies.
