Samsung Mass Produces 4th-Gen 4nm Process

Samsung Electronics continues to push the boundaries of its advanced foundry technology, with its fourth-generation 4nm process, SF4X, officially entering mass production at the end of last year. Designed specifically for high-performance computing (HPC) applications, including AI, this cutting-edge process is expected to play a crucial role in revitalizing Samsung's foundry business.

Reports indicate that Samsung’s wafer foundry division began mass production of the SF4X process in November 2023, following the initial launch of its first-generation 4nm process in 2021. Compared to previous iterations, SF4X features an improved backend-of-line (BEOL) process and high-speed transistors, effectively reducing RC delay—an essential factor in signal propagation speed. Additionally, the technology supports next-generation packaging solutions, including 2.5D and 3D integration.

According to market research firm TrendForce, TSMC reported revenue of $28.65 billion in Q4 2023, reflecting a 14.1% increase from the previous quarter, with its market share rising from 64.7% to 67.1%. In contrast, Samsung Electronics recorded sales of $3.26 billion, marking a 1.4% decline quarter-over-quarter, with its market share dropping from 9.1% to 8.1%.

Amidst these market dynamics, SF4X is poised to become a pivotal factor in Samsung's foundry expansion. The company's 4nm process has achieved a stable yield, while the growing demand from fabless semiconductor firms—both domestically and internationally—continues to drive advancements in AI chip development.
