burst! Philippine earthquake of magnitude 7! MLCC, chip packaging and testing may be hit hard

On the 27th, a strong earthquake occurred near the Dolores region in the northern Philippines at 8:43 a.m. and caused strong shaking in the capital Manila. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured a magnitude of 7.1 and a depth of 10 kilometers.

The Philippines is one of the main production bases for passive components (especially MLCCs) in the world. The world's top three MLCC manufacturers, Murata, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, and TAIYO YUDEN, have established factories in the Philippines. The proportion of production capacity in the Philippines is 15% and 40% respectively.

In addition to the MLCC factory in Luzon, the Philippines, there are many packaging and testing manufacturers with semiconductor factories, such as Nexperia, Intel, Texas Instruments, Amkor, etc. Release parameters show that an earthquake near the Philippine island of Luzon could trigger a tsunami. At present, houses in the area are severely damaged and power supply is interrupted, which may affect the power supply of semiconductor production bases.

It is understood that a large amount of chemicals and gases are used in the front-end process of semiconductors and panels, most of which are toxic substances. If a large earthquake occurs, equipment pipeline leakage may occur.
