As technology advances, more and more people are choosing to buy action cameras because of their compact size. If you're interested in DIY-ing a magnetic charging and cooling base for your action camera, this article is worth a read.
The star of this DIY project is the 360 Go2 action camera. It's super small and easy to use. But that small size also comes with some drawbacks. For example, the battery only lasts about 15 minutes, and continuous shooting can quickly cause the camera to overheat and shut down. If your action camera has the same issue, you can follow this guide to make a magnetic base that handles both charging and cooling.
First, you need to locate where the magnets go on the back and install two magnets there. You'll also need spring-loaded contacts.
Next, find a copper-clad board and embed the magnets inside it. On the front, attach a copper plate to act as a heat-dissipating base, making sure the two contacts line up with the charging points on the back of the camera.
Then, solder a ring of copper around the edge together with the front copper plate and the back copper-clad board. This will help with positioning and heat transfer. Attach a thermal pad in the center with thermal silicone.
Seal the back of the contacts and the solder points on the circuit board using UV glue.
After that, lightly sand it down and solder a USB-C female socket to the other end of the wires.
Stick the base onto the back of your camera like shown in the picture. It fits perfectly.
Since you've added magnets, you can still use the original magnetic lanyard.
Now you can mount the camera on a stand and shoot while charging.
Tests show it can record for over half an hour with no issues.
Done!
