Synopsys Sells Processor IP Business to GlobalFoundries

Recently, U.S.-based semiconductor IP and EDA leader Synopsys announced that it has reached a definitive agreement to sell its processor IP solutions business to GlobalFoundries (GF). Synopsys has long invested in high-quality IP, comprehensive technical support, and robust IP development methodologies to help designers reduce integration risks and accelerate time-to-market. This transaction is expected to further strengthen Synopsys' leadership in interface and foundational IP while continuing to deliver AI-driven, high-value solutions for customers in high-performance computing, mobile, automotive, and consumer electronics, spanning cloud to edge applications.

Under the agreement, GF will acquire Synopsys' processor IP portfolio, including ARC-V(RISC-V) and ARC® CPU IP, DSP IP, neural processing unit (NPU) IP, and associated software development tools such as the ARC MetaWare Development Toolkit. The deal also includes Synopsys' ASIP Designerand ASIP Programmertools, which support automated design and implementation of application-specific instruction set processors (ASIPs). Synopsys and GF will work closely to ensure uninterrupted support for processor IP customers during the transition.

Synopsys will retain and continue to expand its broad design IP portfolio, covering logic libraries, embedded memory, interface IP, security IP, and subsystems. The company expects minimal impact on its overall business from this transaction. Financial terms have not been disclosed, and the deal is anticipated to close in the second half of 2026, subject to customary closing conditions, including required regulatory approvals. Until completion, the processor IP business will continue operating within Synopsys, focusing on execution, customer service, and ongoing innovation.
