Semiconductor Market Caps Surge on AI Boom

According to industry data and market analysts, the rapid rise of artificial intelligence—sparked by the launch of ChatGPT over the past three years—has significantly reshaped the global semiconductor landscape, with more chipmakers climbing into the world’s top 25 companies by market capitalization.

The number of semiconductor firms in the global top 25 has increased from three to seven during this period. Nvidia continues to dominate as the most valuable chip company worldwide, while TSMC remains ranked ninth. Meanwhile, memory manufacturer SK hynix has recorded one of the most dramatic rises, jumping from 322nd place three years ago to 21st globally.

The AI boom has driven semiconductor demand at a faster-than-expected pace. Research firm Gartner forecasts that global semiconductor revenue will grow by 33% this year, surpassing the $1 trillion mark—earlier than many industry experts had anticipated.

Nvidia’s market capitalization reached approximately $4.2 trillion on March 25, maintaining its position as the world’s most valuable company. This represents a surge of over 500% compared to its valuation three years ago. Despite a slight 3% decline in its stock price so far this year, Nvidia’s forward price-to-earnings ratio has dropped to 16.1, making it comparatively attractive versus traditional energy companies.

Broadcom ranks as the second-largest semiconductor company by market value, with its valuation increasing nearly fivefold over three years to $1.51 trillion, placing it seventh globally. TSMC follows with a market cap of $1.46 trillion, reflecting growth of over 200% in the same period. Samsung Electronics ranks fourth among chipmakers, with its market value rising to $820 billion.

SK hynix stands out for its rapid ascent, reaching a market capitalization of approximately $477.7 billion, a sharp increase from $49 billion three years ago, highlighting the strong momentum in the memory chip segment driven by AI applications.
