Infineon Opens €5B Smart Power Fab Early

According to Infineon Technologies AG, the company has officially inaugurated its new Smart Power Fab in Dresden, Germany, several months ahead of the original production schedule. The new facility represents a total investment of €5 billion, making it the largest single investment in Infineon's history and one of Germany's largest industrial investments in recent years.

The new fab will create approximately 1,000 direct jobs and double Infineon's manufacturing capacity in Dresden, further establishing the site as the world's largest production hub for power semiconductors and analog/mixed-signal technologies.

Jochen Hanebeck, Chief Executive Officer of Infineon Technologies AG, said the factory comes online at a pivotal time as demand for power semiconductor solutions continues to accelerate. He noted that the Smart Power Fab will provide much-needed manufacturing capacity for emerging technologies, including AI data center power systems, software-defined vehicles, and renewable energy applications. Hanebeck added that the investment strengthens global AI infrastructure, enhances critical supply chain resilience, and reinforces Infineon's leadership in power semiconductor and analog/mixed-signal manufacturing.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the opening as a strong signal that Germany and Europe remain globally competitive industrial locations. He said the investment demonstrates that advanced semiconductor manufacturing can successfully thrive in Germany and emphasized that power semiconductors are essential for the energy transition, next-generation mobility, and AI infrastructure. Merz added that Infineon's capacity expansion in Dresden will further strengthen Europe's technological sovereignty and the resilience of its strategic semiconductor supply chains.

Dr. Karsten Wildberger, Germany's Federal Minister for Digital Transformation and Government Modernization, said the semiconductors manufactured in Dresden are fundamental components for electric vehicles, wind turbines, and AI data center power infrastructure. He called the Smart Power Fab another important milestone toward Germany's digital sovereignty while highlighting the country's ability to rapidly advance high-tech innovation and industrial development.

Michael Kretschmer, Minister-President of the Free State of Saxony, noted that microelectronics is one of the defining technologies of the 21st century and serves as the foundation for innovation, industrial competitiveness, and economic growth. He said Infineon's investment further strengthens Dresden's position as Europe's largest microelectronics cluster and demonstrates the region's capability to efficiently deliver large-scale advanced manufacturing projects.

The Smart Power Fab incorporates a highly digitalized manufacturing environment designed to significantly improve production efficiency. Through the extensive use of digital technologies, Infineon expects to accelerate production ramp-up by up to twice the previous speed, enabling the company to respond more quickly to evolving market demand.

Digital twin technology was utilized to optimize factory construction and equipment layouts before production began, while artificial intelligence algorithms support system and process validation. The Dresden facility also operates in close coordination with Infineon's manufacturing site in Villach, Austria, through the company's One Virtual Fab model, allowing faster qualification of new products and manufacturing processes across both locations.

Semiconductors produced at the new fab will primarily support high-efficiency power delivery for AI data centers while also serving industrial and automotive applications, including wind and solar energy systems, software-defined vehicles, and intelligent power management. One representative application is intelligent power switches capable of both controlling electrical loads and monitoring current in real time. By combining advanced power semiconductor devices with analog and mixed-signal technologies, the Smart Power Fab is designed to enable higher energy efficiency and more intelligent electronic systems.

The expansion further reinforces Dresden's position as Infineon's flagship manufacturing base for power semiconductors and analog/mixed-signal technologies while strengthening Silicon Saxony, Europe's leading semiconductor ecosystem. In addition to creating 1,000 direct positions, the project is expected to generate substantial indirect employment throughout the regional semiconductor supply chain. Industry research indicates that each new cleanroom job can create up to six additional jobs in related sectors. Today, Silicon Saxony supports more than 80,000 employees across the semiconductor industry.

Sustainability is also a core element of the Smart Power Fab. The facility employs advanced manufacturing technologies together with optimized energy and resource management systems to reduce environmental impact. Its manufacturing operations are designed to operate without natural gas, while advanced water treatment and closed-loop recycling systems significantly reduce freshwater consumption. Approximately 90% of production water is expected to be recycled, enabling the recovery of up to 45% of the facility's energy and setting a new benchmark for sustainable semiconductor manufacturing.
