Samsung Display Supplies 1,600-Nit OLED Laptop Panels

According to Samsung Display, the company will supply global PC manufacturers with dual-stack organic light-emitting diode (OLED) laptop panels featuring peak brightness of up to 1,600 nits.

On July 20, Samsung Display announced that its new dual-stack OLED laptop panels meet the requirements of the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA)’s latest DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification.

DisplayHDR True Black 1400 is a newly introduced certification level by VESA this month. To achieve this certification, a display must deliver a peak brightness of 1,400 nits when 10% of the screen pixels are active while maintaining a black level of no more than 0.0005 nits. The peak brightness requirement is 40% higher than the previous top-tier DisplayHDR True Black 1000 standard.

Samsung Display’s dual-stack OLED panels can achieve a panel-level peak brightness of up to 1,600 nits, more than 40% higher than conventional single-stack OLED panels, which typically reach around 1,100 nits.

The Lenovo Yoga Pro 16, equipped with Samsung Display’s OLED panel, became the first laptop to receive DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification on July 8. From the second half of this year through 2027, ASUS, Dell, MSI, and other PC brands are expected to launch laptops featuring Samsung Display’s True Black 1400-certified OLED panels.

Samsung Display stated that under typical laptop usage conditions, its dual-stack OLED panels offer more than twice the lifespan of conventional single-stack OLED panels. The company added that newly developed organic light-emitting materials further improve display brightness, durability, and overall performance.

With higher brightness, deeper blacks, improved lifespan, and enhanced HDR performance, Samsung Display’s dual-stack OLED technology is expected to accelerate the adoption of premium OLED panels in the high-end laptop market.
