DIY Wooden Car Key Fob from Plywood

If you often feel frustrated because your car key is too large to carry around, and your car uses keyless entry so you never need the built-in mechanical key, you can take advantage of some plywood you have on hand and transform the car key into a wooden worry-free key fob.

First, you can cut a 2 mm thick board to approximately the same length as the key circuit board and use it as the front and back covers. You can then cut the sides into small strips that are 3 mm wide and use them as the frame.

This type of board is relatively soft, so you can cut it with a utility knife. You can mark the button openings and the LED light hole on the front panel.

After cutting out the openings, you can leave the remote-control buttons and the indicator light exposed.

You can then cut another piece of board and peel off one surface layer from the button section. Since the template has a three-layer structure, you can remove one surface layer and then cut away the button section of the middle layer. This design allows you to press the buttons by using the flexibility of the first layer.

You can then glue the frame pieces together layer by layer with white glue to build up the required thickness.

You can use instant glue to firmly attach the battery and the wooden strip that holds the contact points to the battery cover.

This is what the assembled battery cover looks like.

After assembling all the parts, you can use sandpaper to smooth the edges and create rounded corners.

The finished key is now approximately three-fifths smaller in overall size.

For the 2 mm board around the LED light hole, you can remove two of the three layers and leave only one layer. Since the remaining layer is less than 1 mm thick, light can pass through it. With this final step, you can complete your wooden worry-free car key fob.
