MediaTek announces the completion of the world's first 5G NTN satellite phone connection test

Recently, MediaTek and Rohde & Schwarz (Rohde & Schwarz) jointly demonstrated the potential of 5G NTN (also known as Non-Terrestrial Network NTN, Non-Terrestrial Networks) technology, and announced the completion of the world's first 5G NTN satellite mobile phone experiment The room connection test, this test can directly let the smart phone realize the Internet function through the satellite signal.

The test was done at MediaTek Labs using Rohde & Schwarz test equipment, simulating a real LEO satellite constellation at an altitude of 600 km, where each satellite is moving fast in orbit at nearly 27,000 km/h . The test chip uses MediaTek's mobile communication chip equipped with 5G NR NTN satellite network functions. The design of the chip complies with the 3GPP (International Standards Organization) version 17 spectrum definition function.

HC Hwang, General Manager of MediaTek's Wireless Communication Systems and Cooperation Department, said: "Through this test, MediaTek has successfully demonstrated the ability to connect a 5G smartphone to a satellite network, opening the door to the development of 5G satellite networks that will enable ubiquitous Connectivity takes place around the world.”

MediaTek expects that the technology will expand the availability of 5G connectivity services, especially in critical communications, transportation, agriculture, fleet and heavy machine management, and IoT, enabling more application scenarios and new types of business development. ‎

At present, MediaTek has not introduced more details of this mobile communication chip equipped with 5G NR NTN satellite network function, but it is expected that this test will be the basis for a new chip design in the future.
