Amidst the crisp autumn breeze and fragrant osmanthus blooms, we welcome the Autumn Equinox solar term of 2026 on September 23. On this day, the sun reaches 180 degrees of ecliptic longitude, and day and night are nearly equal in length. After the Autumn Equinox, days gradually become shorter and nights longer in the Northern Hemisphere, while temperatures continue to fall. As a traditional solar term associated with balance and harvest, the Autumn Equinox also marks an important transition from the warmth of summer to the coolness of autumn.
The Autumn Equinox (Qiufen) is the sixteenth solar term of the traditional twenty-four solar terms and the fourth solar term of autumn. The word “Equinox” refers to the nearly equal division of day and night, while also indicating that autumn has reached its midpoint. The solar term has a long history in Chinese culture, and ancient people used it to observe seasonal changes and arrange agricultural activities. Traditional customs include eating seasonal vegetables, worshipping the moon, flying kites, balancing eggs, and celebrating the harvest. In 2018, the Autumn Equinox was also designated as the Chinese Farmers’ Harvest Festival, giving this traditional solar term a new cultural meaning.
Coinciding with the Autumn Equinox, the global semiconductor industry has also witnessed several notable developments. On September 21, AMD surpassed a $1 trillion market capitalization for the first time, as investors continued to focus on the company’s expanding role in artificial intelligence computing. AMD shares rose 9.6% to $613.50 during the session, reaching a record high. The milestone highlights the continued impact of AI demand on the semiconductor industry and the growing importance of processors, accelerators, and data-center technologies.
Meanwhile, Chinese memory chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) announced on September 20 that its fifth-generation DRAM technology platform, known as the G5 Platform, had entered mass production. The platform uses quadruple patterning to achieve an 11.95-nanometer active-area half-pitch for memory arrays, while CXMT said its die output per wafer has increased by at least 50% compared with the previous generation. The company also introduced 24Gb LPDDR5X products based on the new platform, marking another development in advanced DRAM manufacturing.
At the same time, the memory market is showing signs of easing in some segments, although costs remain elevated. Acer Chairman and CEO Jason Chen said on September 19 that supplies of mainstream DDR4 and DDR5 memory had improved, while shortages remained concentrated in certain high-end products. Despite improving availability, higher component costs could push PC prices up by around 5% to 20% in the fourth quarter of 2026, with pricing pressure potentially continuing into 2027.
As autumn progresses, the days will gradually become shorter, but technological innovation continues to move forward. From AMD’s expanding AI business to CXMT’s advances in DRAM manufacturing and the changing dynamics of the global memory market, the semiconductor industry is experiencing another period of adjustment and development. Just as the Autumn Equinox represents balance and harvest, the industry is also seeking a balance between technology, supply, demand, and costs while moving toward the next stage of growth.
