According to the British Guardian, British MPs have warned that due to a lack of government support, the United Kingdom is missing out on a wave of investment and lagging behind other countries in the fast-growing semiconductor industry.
To that end, the government should urgently publish its long-delayed semiconductor strategy and seek partnerships with allies to ensure the UK remains part of the semiconductor supply chain, according to a report by members of Parliament's business committee published on Monday.
British MPs say British industry is heavily reliant on companies from other countries and there is little hope of a turnaround unless the government steps up support. The government should consider supporting the creation of new fabs, they said.
"The government's failure to act to support the semiconductor industry puts UK companies at significant risk," said Labor MP Darren Jones, chair of the committee. "Other countries are investing in the resilience of their semiconductor supply chains, but UK ministers can't even publish their semiconductor strategy on time."
