Tomorrow marks the Winter Solstice(dōng zhì), one of the traditional Chinese twenty-four solar terms. On this day, the Sun is positioned directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, making it the day with the shortest period of daylight and the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Observing this natural phenomenon, ancient people established it as one of the earliest solar terms among the twenty-four.

Customs for the Winter Solstice vary by region, each filled with everyday charm. In northern China, it is common for households to eat dumplings. In the south, people may enjoy tangyuan, winter solstice rice balls, or wontons, which symbolize reunion and completeness. Some areas still preserve the ancient traditions of offering sacrifices to ancestors and praying for blessings for elders.
