Samsung to Resume P5 Fab in Pyeongtaek, Production by 2028

According to sources, Samsung is set to resume construction next month on its advanced P5 semiconductor fab in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, with production expected to begin in 2028. The facility was initially scheduled to start in 2024 but was later put on hold.

Insiders indicate that land preparation for the P5 site is underway, and an official groundbreaking announcement is expected soon. Representatives from Samsung Electronics and Samsung E&A said structural construction could begin within one to two months.

Samsung started building the P5 fab in 2023 but paused the project the following year due to a slowdown in the memory chip market. Last month, Samsung Electronics and Samsung E&A reported to financial regulators that the contract value with Samsung has increased from 391.5 billion KRW in 2023 to 550 billion KRW.

Additional reports note that Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries are also involved with the P5 project. Samsung C&T handled infrastructure for P1 through P4, while Samsung Heavy Industries was responsible for later stages of P3 and P4.

Sources reveal that the P5 design features a three-story fab, with a scale roughly equivalent to the combined size of P3 and P4, both of which are two-story facilities.
