2026 Minor Cold Arrives!

Today marks the Minor Cold (xiǎo hán), the 23rd solar term in the traditional Chinese solar terms, begins this year on Jan 5 and ends on Jan 19. Literally, Minor Cold signifies that the cold has not yet reached its peak; however, according to long-term meteorological records, this period often marks the coldest stretch of the entire year.

Although the chill is biting, traditional customs bring warmth to daily life: it is common for people to eat Laba congee around Minor Cold, a hot porridge made from glutinous rice, red dates, peanuts, and other ingredients to ward off the cold; in southern regions like Guangdong, there is a habit of eating glutinous rice in the morning on Minor Cold. At this time, plum blossoms bloom defiantly in the cold, making plum viewing an elegant pursuit, while in the north, river surfaces freeze solid, and various ice and snow activities quietly emerge.
