DIY Portable Mini Benchtop Drill Upgrade

If you're into DIY and have ever thought about upgrading a mini benchtop drill's power supply, this article is definitely worth a read.

The mechanical parts don't really need any changes, but there are a few quirks worth mentioning: the 895 motor feels a bit overkill, the drill chuck is slightly off-center, and honestly, dragging around an external power supply is just too cumbersome. If you've noticed these issues too, then follow along as we turn that bulky external supply into a handy, portable power source.

First, you'll need a waterproof enclosure to house the components. Next, add a speed controller board. Since our setup already comes with a built-in switch, you can also go the extra mile and include a voltage and current display for real-time monitoring:

The overall setup looks like this:

Here's the back view. In the picture, a 3S model battery is used, fully charged at 12.6V. It's still usable for drilling, though the speed is a bit low for sanding or cutting. If you want more power, pairing it with a 6S battery will give you the performance you need.

The voltage and current at the lowest speed are shown in the image below:

And that's it! With this simple mod, your mini benchtop drill with a geared motor is now fully portable and much more convenient to use. Happy drilling!
