DIY LED Desoldering Station from Old Drive

If someone is interested in DIYing an LED lamp bead desoldering station using a computer optical drive, this article is worth checking out.

They created an LED lamp bead desoldering station from a discarded computer optical drive. To replace the LED beads on a lamp board, they initially purchased a commercially available LED lamp bead desoldering and repair thermally controlled heating plate. After using it twice, they realized that using just the bare board was inconvenient. Therefore, they decided to transform it into a proper desoldering station, making use of the casing from an old computer optical drive, which proved to be more suitable.

Overall Appearance

The heating element used is rated at 220V and 200W.

Next, a switch with an indicator light needs to be installed.

For the power input, a D-type socket is used. If someone prefers not to have a wire trailing from the back, it can be replaced with a standard socket, which also makes storage easier.

Four machine feet were installed at the bottom to provide stability.

Internal Structure

Two epoxy resin boards, salvaged from other electronics, were used. The purpose of using two boards is to simplify the positioning of the heating plate and the casing holes. One board fixes the heating plate, while the other is secured to the casing’s internal support. After marking the positions, holes were drilled, and the two boards were fixed together.

A D-type socket was installed, with an added fuse holder to ensure safety.

Holes were cut into the casing to accommodate components.

Installed Components

The wiring uses high-temperature-resistant cables salvaged from disassembled machines.

The height is adjusted using copper pillars with screws. The entire heating plate is supported only by these four screws, which helps minimize heat transfer to the casing.

The switch is connected using terminal plug-and-play connectors.

The heating plate is set slightly higher than the casing by approximately 0.5mm to allow proper operation.

The desoldering station is now ready, combining functionality with compactness and safety, making it a practical solution for anyone working with LED lamp boards.
